02:45 am - That book meme that's going around

Have you read more than 6 of these books? The BBC believes most people will have read only 6 of the 100 books listed here. Instructions: Copy this into your NOTES. Bold those books you've read in their entirety, italicize the ones you started but didn't finish or read an excerpt.

08:29 pm - So not in the mood for this.
I got Geoffrey out for a second playtime today since he didn't get out the other day when I was really sick. After playing tag with himself he ended up on my stomach/chest, trying to arrange my tshirt into a nest or something while I caught up on Google Reader. This is cute at first, but quickly gets annoying becuase it is hard to see the screen with a large rabbit in the way, and I like my tshirt how it is, thanks very much, it does not need to be rearranged. So I finally got annoyed with him and (gently) shoved him off my stomach onto the couch, and was rewarded with a bunny dance...and urine flinging everywhere.

Rabbit urine is possibly the grossest thing ever. It's particularly gross when it's flung across you, your ipad, your couch, and your laptop computer. The bun was gathered up and unceremoniously dumped into his cage, grounded until further notice. I stripped naked on the way to the bathroom and took a frantic sponge bath in the sink. At least I'd changed out of my nice clothes and back into a t-shirt and sweat pants. Vinegar and I just became best friends for a good 20 minutes, wiping down the ipad and computer. As far as I can tell the area under the keys is safe...possibly a result of the unusually viscous nature of rabbit urine.

Despite my annoying busy Mondays, I am calling the vet tomorrow. (It only got put off this week due to whatever virus I am getting over.)

When my professors said "Turn in your peer-reviewed rough drafts on Monday," they meant "Turn in your peer-reviewed, slightly chewed-on-by-bunny rough drafts on Monday," right?

Music made with bees - You can even download the sound file, in case you want to make your own bee music.

Modern-day fallout shelters (a Human Habitrail!) - Doesn't look terribly homey, but you'd be safe, I suppose...  Luckily, in case the end of the world occurs, you probably already know the skills necessary for survival, thanks to movies.

The media is claiming that bread was around 30,000 years ago, when the cavemen were around.  Not so.  Scientists found evidence of ground starch, but of the 9 different plants identified, most were roots, and only one was a seed (grains, like what are in bread, are seeds from grasses).

E.O. Wilson and Harrison Ford as you to give a damn about biodiversity - A call for science writing that is American-public friendly, becuase "an uneducated public is a dangerous public."

ETA - Human flag gymnastics.   Wow.  :o

12:36 am - Joel Burns
Joel Burns, Fort Worth city councilman, and his "it gets better" story.  There's a youtube video (not cc-ed) but the link also sums up the main points and has some dialogue.

ETA: Also! You can now adopt kids in Florida, regardless of your sexual orientation. Woohoo!

08:45 pm - Attention d/Deaf/hard of hearing people!
For the teaching class Tom and I are taking, we have to teach for an hour and our section is on cultural diversity.  The book chapter and other readings are very focused on cultural diversity in terms of race, specifically international students in the classroom.  That is all well and good, but is most definitely not the only sort of cultural diversity out there.  During our teaching time, we want to present some case studies about situations that might arise in the classroom due to differences in culture.  Case studies about international students and race issues are pretty easy to come by, but ones about Deaf culture or issues faced by deaf/hard of hearing students are more difficult to find.  Therefore, I will likely have to write one.

Do you guys have any good suggestions for ideas to include in a case study?  I'm not talking about things like "need captions on movies" and "that stupid teacher keeps walking between me and the interpreter", but more cultural things that have caused problems or misunderstandings between you and the hearing people in class.

Any help is greatly appreciated!

How clothing companies lie to spare your feelings - This is more about men's pants sizes than women's pant sizes, but applicable to both.  The number on the tag is likely much smaller than your actual waist size.

True Earth: The real, bluer marble - Unlike the original picture of earth from space, this one shows Earth for what it mostly is - water.

Wildlife of Madagascar - Some really amazing wildlife photographs of rare species in Madagascar.  Landscape photos too.

Depictions: The Day After Tomorrow in Legos - Title speaks for itself!

200 New species of frogs, spiders, mammals and more discovered [in Papua New Guinea] - Cool photos!
